| | The Thai Islands are a picture-perfect island paradise. A haven of lush palm trees, gently swaying between a harmony of hammocks. It is a place of impossibly turquoise waters, of salty spritzes of lapping waves. Lounge around on fine grain beaches that make silk feel rough, lay out on sandy shores and bask in the good-life. With clear skies that bake the earth in a warming bath of light,... | |
| Bangkok is the antithesis of Singapore. While that city-state is staid and choreographed, categorically ordered and rigidly regulated, Bangkok is a free form poem of people. Like the human spectrum in general, it isn't solely a rainbow wash of roses; but its thorns of poverty and seedy seduction are only one petal amongst the flowering bustle of honking horns, pedaling feet and smiling faces... | |
| Chiang Mai is the second largest city in Thailand. Accurate numbers aren’t easy to get though – the flux of people relocating from the countryside isn’t well recorded – but no figure tops 1 million. Most numbers have the population under half a million. But Chiang Mai is not a sleepy town. Once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom (which included parts of Thailand, Burma, and Laos), there is plenty... | |
| Purported to be the most popular beach destination in Asia, Phuket is a terrestrial marvel. Go barefoot on the cashmere soft sands, get wet in the warm marine splash, and grab your weighted belt for a stunning array of scuba adventures. The Andaman gulf affords a submarine backdrop for a tropical diving marathon whilst the pulsating nightlife and beautiful hospitality of Patong Beach will wash... |
| Don't stay in Krabi Town itself, but there are some lovely coastal places in the area. Ao Nang is a bustling resort with lots of hotels, shops and restaurants and is fun - lively without being too big or sleazy. It's beach isn't the greatest but it's easy to go to Railey, Poda Island etc on longtails. Not a great snorkelling area (eg compared with Phi Phi). | |
| Lopburi is smallish town to the north of Bangkok. It is worth at least a few hour stop on you train ride to northern Thailand. There are ruins immediately across street from train station that are worth seeing, and also another site of ruins down the street that is home to many dozens of monkeys. | |
| Old Sukhothai is Thailand's most influencial religious and cultural center. | |
| Towering limestone cliffs encircle Railay Beach, Thailand in an enormous and lithified embrace. Not unlike the Stoneman's strong hands from Wolfgang Petersen's seminal 1984 film, 'The Never Ending Story.' Unlike hapless Atrayu and his fallen steed Artax, neither the Swamps of Sadness nor The Nothing will impeed your Thailandic paradise. The Childlike Empress may not be sunbathing, but her... |
| Koh Phanghan is a curious island – during most of the month, it’s mild-mannered, not too crowded, and very cheap. All the watersports available on other islands are here as well – but there is no rushing about to participate. If you want to, fine – but plenty of people spend their time lounging on the large white sand beaches, wading out to the reefs with snorkel goggles, or enjoy a sunset... |
| Pattaya is a dangerous city. No, not in terms of pickpockets or violence, or any sort of crime. Although perhaps slightly elevated due to its tourist image, Pattaya is about as safe as anywhere else in Thailand – which is quite safe. And we’re not talking about the various extreme sports. Sure, dangers accompany that, but no more here than elsewhere. We’re certainly not talking about the... |
