Pattaya is a dangerous city. No, not in terms of pickpockets or violence, or any sort of crime. Although perhaps slightly elevated due to its tourist image, Pattaya is about as safe as anywhere else in Thailand – which is quite safe.

And we’re not talking about the various extreme sports. Sure, dangers accompany that, but no more here than elsewhere.

We’re certainly not talking about the beautiful beaches in the northern part of town – and not even about the stray glass you might find on the beaches in the south.

No, the real danger is to your sensibilities. In addition to being a lovely beach resort, Pattaya is also a mecca of sex tourism, and parts of town can be quite seedy. So if you are the type to be offended, be careful – Pattaya will be quite dangerous.

In recent years the government has tried to do with Pattaya what America has done with Las Vegas: make it family-friendly.  The sex tourism is still there, but there’s plenty of other adventures and diversions built for those who just want to go to a nice beach without traveling down to the south. Pattaya is only a two hour drive from Bangkok, beaches on the northern side are largely free of seediness, and while the coast itself has murky water at best, there are a few islands with nice dives a short boat ride away.
