| From Bangkok there are plenty of VIP buses that make the trip, and hiring a driver to take you down will be around 800 or a 1000 baht from inside the city, twice that if you go straight from the airport. If determined, you could wind your way to the area via trains, but that’s far from the best option – more costly and complex than buses, not as comfortable as private drivers, and nowhere near as central as either. There is also a flight from Koh Samui if you’re in the south. |
Tuk-tuks are maddeningly plentiful, and songthaews run both as private taxis delivering you straight to particular addresses, and as a sort of bus line, patrolling certain busy streets and they’ll get you near whatever your final destination is. If you plan on doing a lot of exploring, renting a motorbike will be anywhere from 100-500 baht a day, depending on the quality of the bike and where you rent it. No need to make reservations – there are enough shops that you’ll never run out of options. Cars are also available, but not recommended – given the haphazard nature of Thai traffic, that lanes are no more than suggestions, and that many streets will be quite narrow – not to mention difficulty parking – cars are more a nuisance than a solid option unless you’re staying on the outskirts of the city. |
