Introduction to Railay Beach
Towering limestone cliffs encircle Railay Beach, Thailand in an enormous and lithified embrace. Not unlike the Stoneman's strong hands from Wolfgang Petersen's seminal 1984 film, 'The Never Ending Story.' Unlike hapless Atrayu and his fallen steed Artax, neither the Swamps of Sadness nor The Nothing will impeed your Thailandic paradise. The Childlike Empress may not be sunbathing, but her crystalline blue eyes will be reflected in the azure waters reflecting Earth's version of Fantastica Land. Railay harbor is indeed a stunning, otherworldly locale, a mecca for rock climbers; a chalky handed clan rising for predawn ascents from their beach bungalows dotting the aqua waters like storks. The beach is secluded and must be reached via long boat from the mainland, the commute itself an authentic splash of salty adventure as the 70 foot low-boats slice through the pounding surf like racing skiffs. Because of the extreme beauty and extreme climbing of Railay, the usual island blend of layed back backpackers is replaced by a focused, lithe tribe of adrenaline junkies. Don't let an aversion to heights or dangerous exercise deter you from a visit, even if you don't feel your inner Peter Parker encouraging you to assault the vertical, come instead as an anthropologist, sip a coconut cocktail, observe the human arachnids and wonder at the thrill of a long, deep tissue Thai massage.
