This is the perhaps the easiest part of the trip.  Aside from a few five star resorts on Phuket and scattered about the other islands, there isn’t much variance in price or quality.  You might have extended cable here or a beachside hammock there, but each island has a fairly set range.  Koh Phanghan is probably the cheapest, with bungalows on the beach starting at around 150 baht, or even 100 baht during the off-season.

Bear in mind, prices are usually set per person – so the same bungalow that is 200 baht for one is 400 baht for two.  You can negotiate in those cases – or as a solo traveler, especially if you’ll stay more than a couple days.  Just be sure to do so before agreeing to take a room.  If you wish to go with one of the many drivers who greet you at the docks and offer a place, they are authorized to go lower than the offered rates.  Once you ride with them, you might be relatively far from other bungalows, and they’ll use the free ride as part of
their bargaining power.

Tourists come in waves due to the ferries, so if you want the best locales, you should move fast.  Almost every hotel will have bungalows right on the beach, and those further back – during high season oceanside can be harder to come by.  Still, if that’s what you really want, you should be able to find it – generally speaking, the farther you travel from the piers, the cheaper and freer the rooms, and the quieter the
atmosphere.
