Koh Phanghan is a curious island – during most of the month, it’s mild-mannered, not too crowded, and very cheap.  All the watersports available on other islands are here as well – but there is no rushing about to participate.  If you want to, fine – but plenty of people spend their time lounging on the large white sand beaches, wading out to the reefs with snorkel goggles, or enjoy a sunset sipping something refreshing and dining at the fresh (very fresh) catch of the day.

Then comes the full moon, when the bottom segment of the island turns into a free-love-sex-drugs bachannalian bliss search.  The families flee, and young fashionable tourists (and locals alike) descend from all the other islands to let off some steam and go wild – usually for days, but at least all night.

One of the quieter spots on the island is Chalok Lam Bay in the north of the island about 15 minutes from the port of Thongsala and 30 minutes from the party town of Haad Rin. Many people choose to party hard in the south and then relax in the less developed north.

So depending on what you like, Koh Phanghan can be the perfect spot or exactly the place to avoid.  Make sure you plan your trip with that in mind.

One of the slightly less popular islands, the only one I went to, so it's hard to compare to others, but it was a fabulous place for sleeping in hammocks, drinking coconut smoothies beneath the coconut trees and watching the water that was unreal - so blue and so clear. Snorkelling at Ko Ma beach area, over coral, with fish and all sorts of crazy creatures, was one of THE most amazing experiences of my life ... like a psychadelic drug trip, such a different reality...but all the more crazy, because it was REAL! It will blow your mind.
