Koh Samui Travel Guide

Although many of its nearby islands have better values and less development, Koh Samui has quite a few things going for it. It’s a beautiful island with many conveniences. And the nearby Angthong Marine National Park – an easy day tour from Samui – is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Overdevelopment is a growing problem. Much of the island is covered in civilization, along with the accompanying concrete, cement, and litter. The beaches are often populated with both tourists and tourist attractions – from jet skis to hot air balloons.

Another problem is inflation, something the locals complain about often. According to some estimates, Samui is now more expensive than Phuket – the place for which it was once the cheap alternative.

Along the less traveled locales you can still find (narrow) white sand beaches, turqoise water, and even a bit of diving (although mostly your scuba trips will involve a somewhat lengthy boat ride).

You can find similar and/or better beaches on nearby Koh Phangan, a one hour ferry ride to the north (and visible on all but the most overcast days from the Big Buddha beaches). Phangan’s beaches have bungalows and food at rates which far outstrip Samui, while providing a more tranquil and authentic island experience. However, Phangan simply isn’t as convenient as Samui – a major factor if you only have a few days on the islands.
