Phuket has a very active bar and club scene, reminiscent of mainland areas in Bangkok or Pattaya.

On the east, Koh Phanghan has the reputation, but in truth it’s a very quiet and peaceful island – most of the month.  Every full moon the southern tip of the isle is taken over by a bacchanalian festival worthy of Woodstock or Burning Man.  That party is an all-nighter and often lasts a few days, so if you aren’t up for it, go north or pick another island when the werewolves roam.

Koh Tao is much smaller, but still is very active.  In fact, most of the attendees of the full moon party will spend the rest of their time on Tao, visiting the different clubs.

There’s a party each night, with the different bars and restaurants rotating the location between them.  Tuesday night is as large as Saturday – the tourists don’t care what day it is, and the locals work the odd schedules that the travel industry demands.

On most islands you can also find hashish and opium bars, which rewind to the days of lazy dens and happy stupefaction, if that’s what you like.  And, as mentioned earlier, there’s the bung lassi.  A number of people will have a nice meal, split a bung, and sit in the surf watching the stars shine brilliantly on some dark secluded corner.  Still, whether it’s frenetic dancing or luxurious lounging you’re after, the beaches will provide.
