Introduction to Togo Edit Section - Togo Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Togo is a former German colony that later became a French colony after WWI. The legacy of the Germans still exists with the German beers, making Togo the best equipped country with beer in West Africa. Togo's ruling government, long ruled after independence by Gnassingbé Eyadéma is now ruled by his son Faure. Togo is no democracy, but don't say that on the streets of Lome.

While it is a relatively peaceful country, the Togolese will secretly tell stories about the destruction caused by Eyadema. Nonetheless, it is a small country worth visiting. The sheer obscurity and the difficulty of getting there make Togo an off-the-wall place to vacation. But, the beauty of the South and the culture of the North will make your visit worthwhile.

The beaches of the South are beautiful and untouched and the rolling hills of the Kara region make this a wonderful place to visit. But, bring pocket change to pay the machine gun carrying gendarmes who can spot a tourist like an eagle. The bush taxis are packed to the brim and it'll be worth a photo to see yourself smashed in a mini bus with chickens, goats, and 15+ of your newest Togolese friends. Get ready for an adventure. Bring your sunscreen, camera and be ready prepared to laugh and cry. There's no other experience out there like Togo.
