Introduction to Lome Edit Section - Lome Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Lome is the business and financial center of the sleepy nation of Togo. It is a pleasant place with its ocean breeze and homely inhabitants; it is also relatively clean, safe and navigable despite repeated US State Department warnings of political unrest.

True, Lome is where the Togolese usually gather to express political dissent. Many protests drew military backlash and even civilian deaths in the 1990s until Gnassingbé Eyadéma’s death; today his son rules with a little less of an iron fist. However, these stories should not scare you from a visit. Use your common sense, read irinews and visit Lome when there is no reported unrest. You will find it a relaxed, funloving and charismatic town.

Lome
is the capital of West Africa’s linen trade. The market has mountains of fabric for sale at wholesale prices. A walk through the market area and a downtown tour of important monuments should take you an afternoon. There is nothing particularly striking to see in Lome, but you could fall in love with its small town charm. On most weeknights you will find many men and women enjoying the end of their workday on the many terraces of Boulevard du 13 Janvier. There are excellent bakeries and a pleasant array of cultural events such as movies and concerts on many nights of the week. A visit to Lome should include a tasting at Togo’s national brewery (Les Brasseries de Togo). For the staggering array of beers (amber, stout, lager, pilsner and two more I cannot recall) you can thank the Germans who colonized the region for a century.
