Introduction to London Edit Section - London Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Perhaps the best way to describe Londoners is that they don’t take themselves too seriously. Having a history that endured through Romans, Saxons, Vikings, one bloody mean queen, the Blitz, Prince Charles, a traditional cuisine of jellied eels, and the Spice Girls, you probably wouldn’t either.  It’s not that Brits today don’t take things to heart; a poor football performance in the Euro Cup, for example, will depress the entire city for days. But despair is fleeting, and from the moment you step foot in London, camaraderie and cheerio chaps find you.  British charm seems right at home in its equally charming city, with wide, clean streets, parks on every corner, and architecture as colorful and diverse as its increasingly multiethnic population.  London really is the Jones of the European capital neighborhood; it’s a haven for history buffs, a fashion and music hub, a gastronomic prodigy, and manages to be attractive, athletic, literary, and arty all at the same time.

The greater London area is home to over 7 million people and attracts 27 million visitors each year, making it both the most populous city in Western Europe and the world’s most popular city destination.  Anglophiles should note London is quite the friendly ethnic mutt these days, to the extent that Chicken Tikki Masala has taken over as the unofficial national dish.  Immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, wealthy foreigners, and professional transients have brought a bit of everything from Bangkok to Calgary.  Always cosmopolitan but still devoted to the pomp and circumstance of tradition, London will offer you something you’re not even looking for.  Guides to the city will get you where you want to go –whether that’s to see the Rosetta Stone, the site of a Beatle’s album cover, a wax Spiderman, or the grassy knoll-less knolls of Wimbledon.  But London above all is a city that lusts for wanderlust and the traveler willing to just get lost in its streets (you probably will anyway so just go with it.)  To experience the full sensation of London, remember that people, not monuments, are the true life of the city that sleeps only a little less than Manhattan.
