“In hell the cooks are British.”  “One cannot trust people whose cuisine is so bad.  The only thing the British have ever given European farming is mad cow.” (Anonymous/Jaques Chirac).

Let’s be honest, the bad British cuisine jokes are old, and unless you’re completely set on riding the 1980s out to their last dying breath, you’ll join the rest of us that are now recognizing London as a modern gastronomic kaleidoscope.  The handiwork of big wigs Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsey can now be spotted all over the city, and children of the fusion revolution are reinventing even the most reputably appalling British dishes.  While international crowds are drawn to a restaurant scene that turns around the hottest flavors of the week, there are also a panoply of eateries with less of a craving for the grace of celebrity presence and Michelin stars than for their long-standing and well deserved local following.  The multiculturalism that now characterizes British society has left its mark on London’s cuisine as well -- even the U.K.’s “true national dish,” chicken tikki masala, isn’t actually British but rather an Anglo-Bangladeshi creation.  Whether you’re out for the best fish n’ chips in town, a sighting of Madonna over beluga caviar, or a late night, cheap bite with friends, London has more than enough to offer.

Many of London’s highly rated restaurants are also the most expensive and difficult to book.  Making reservations well in advance is essential!  Generally speaking, the top hotels often house equally sought after restaurants, but many are also concentrated in Mayfair, Covent Garden, and Knightsbridge.

For the people out there who would rather not swallow next month’s rent in the form of sautéed goose liver, but don’t want to spend another night eating bread and cheese in the hostel, there is hope.  Loads of restaurants around the city require less than 10 pounds for a great meal and lively atmosphere.

If you feel the crankiness of low blood sugar sink in while rushing off to the next site, look for your fix at a food vendor, grocery store, or Pret a Manger.  Take-away stands sell fish n’ chips (deal with the greasiness and douse with plenty of vinegar and salt), simple sandwiches, and the ever popular kebab (roasted chicken or lamb, also known to some pickier eaters as mystery meat, rotating on a spittle that is shaved off into pita bread) for around 5 pounds.  London’s main grocery stores are Sainsbury, Marks and Spencer, and Waitrose, the first being the least expensive; all three offer great pre-made sandwiches and salads for 5 pounds or less.  Finally, Pret A Manger, found just about everywhere in London these days, offers good coffee, smoothies, and pre-made sandwiches and salads for less than 10 pounds.

Eight Over Eight
The “it” restaurant of the moment for Asian fusion is Eight Over Eight (392 King’s Road, SW3. Tube: Sloan Square), where rich hipsters and local bankers reserve weeks in advance for incredible dim sum, watermelon martinis, and nice human scenery.

Belgo Centraal
Visit this Belgian restaurant/pub from 5-6:30 pm, Mon.-Fri. for its “beat the clock” special; you pay the price of the time you order for a great happy hour vibe and your choice of an entrée and drink (i.e. pay 6 pounds at 6 p.m. for a large bowl of mussels with fries and a Kriek, or cherry-flavored beer.) Belgian, 12 pounds. 50 Earlham Street, WC2. Tube: Covent hhGarden/Leicester Square.

Bünker Bier Hall
Across the street from Belgo Centraal you’ll find another lively pub/restaurant, Bünker Bier Hall (41 Earlham Street), serving Anglo-American platters (burgers, bangers and mash, nachos, and salads) for around 8 pounds, with a great beer and wine list, and a young, local crowd.

Asia de Cuba
For swankier Asian-fusion, try Asia de Cuba in the stylish St. Martin’s Lane Hotel. Here, it’s really all about the atmosphere but the food (Asian cuisine with -- you guessed it -- Cuban influence) is still an experience, and slightly less expensive than Nobu. Tube: Covent Garden

Mango Room
A favorite among the locals, the Mango Room offers a nice change from tourist-packed restaurants in London’s West end. Always buzzing and open until midnight, it’s great for grabbing a bite and a cocktail or two before hitting bars in the Camden area. Caribbean/West Indian, 10/22 pounds. 10-12 Kentish Town Road, NW1. Tube: Camden Town.

Rules
If you’re looking to try traditional British dishes, head to Rules (35 Maiden Lane, WC2, Covent Garden Tube) or Richard Corrigan at Lindsay House (21 Romilly Street, W1, Leicester Square Tube). You might sample shepard’s pie (meaty stew with a pastry shell), the slightly irreverent bangers and mash (sausage and potatoes), scones (the British bagel), or sip afternoon tea with cucumber sandwiches...

Richard Corrigan
If you’re looking to try traditional British dishes, head to Rules (35 Maiden Lane, WC2, Covent Garden Tube) or Richard Corrigan at Lindsay House (21 Romilly Street, W1, Leicester Square Tube). You might sample shepard’s pie (meaty stew with a pastry shell), the slightly irreverent bangers and mash (sausage and potatoes), scones (the British bagel), or sip afternoon tea with cucumber sandwiches...

Le Caprice
Le Caprice is a sister restaurant to The Ivy and has a similar menu, price range, and buzz factor. It's near St. James’s Palace. Tube: Green Park.

Ciro’s Pizza Pomodoro
From the sidewalk this place looks like just another hole in the wall, but downstairs you’ll find a whole world of drunken debauchery and merry-making (along with top-quality pizzas and live music). Not for the faint of heart but perfect for a group of friends out for a good time. Italian, 10/20 pounds. 51 Beauchamp Place, SW3. Tube: Knightsbridge.

Nobu
Like its NYC sister, Nobu packs in a suited sea of hard-to-impress clients whose corporate cards don’t seem to mind the exorbitant prices. Some cry ugly in reaction to its minimalist features and unforgiving lighting, but its really all about the food here (lobster ceviche and sea urchin tempura anyone?) Japanese/Peruvian fusion, 70 pounds. Tube: Hyde Park or Bond Street.

Le Gavroche
This is modern French cuisine. A customer service perfectionist, this is one of London’s most famous, splurge-worthy restaurants. In the Parisian tradition, it specializes in romantic ambience and dishes with egregiously long names (try the Ragout d’Huitres et Coquilles St. Jacques aux Truffes et Poireaux). 70 pounds. Tube: Marble Arch.

The Ivy
Its menu and décor manages to be both classic and cosmopolitan, serving up Anglo-American “comfort food” (eggs benedict and fish n’ chips) and plenty of “global” glitzy favorites (top-quality sashimi, beluga caviar, curry, and an impressive vegetarian section). Eclectic Modern British/European, 40 pounds. Tube: Leicester Square.
