Introduction to York Edit Section - York Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Back when New Amsterdam was still but a twinkle in the Dutch eye, Old York was plotting its trip to the New World. Old York, unlike New York, does not have a Statue of Liberty, and sadly, is also lacking any towering sky scrapers. The jokes aside, York is a Dickens novel writ in mortar, brick, and stone. It is a delightfully picturesque city-village, centered around the 1000 year old, York Minster, the biggest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe. The biggest Gothic cathedral in all of Europe, is of course located in central Seville, Spain. The majestic Minster's interior is bathed in a video of colors, a chromatic circus that dazzles the eyes. Located at the confluence of the rivers, Ouse and Foss, this historic locale was founded in 71 AD and has had both Roman and Viking overseers. A medieval hot spot, York today is not one of England's most bustling cities, but it is a pleasant university town, and well worth a visit, especially if you are on the train heading to or from Edinburgh.
