Introduction to Scotland Edit Section - Scotland Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

"In the year of our lord 1314, patriots of Scotland, starving and outnumbered charged the fields of Bannockburn, they fought like warrior poets, they fought like Scotsmen, and won their freedom...forever."  Iconic Braveheart quotes are a standard introduction to this rugged and beautiful highland nation, this misty and plaided clan of proud men and prouder woman, this cornucopic table full of amber drams and haggis platters.  While the textbook visualization of  a warrior poet is to conjure up an image of Walden Pond and the epic stick fights which took place there between Emerson and Thoreau, the Scottish version is a reference to Scotland's barbarian vigor and its artists soul, the scholars wit and the fighters passion.  Scotland certainly has more pride per square inch than most nations, the people aren't passively Scottish, they work at it, and excel at it, and they tell you about it, everyday.

They have a lot  to be proud of, Edinburgh, Scotland's capital, is an enlightened university town, an apex of academia,  the city is a constellation of history, a beautiful medieval melody of past and present, both traditional culture and contemporary vigor.  The highlands are a haven of hiking, climbing and outdoor adventurism.  Ben Nevis is Scotland and the UK's highest peak, an impressive mount rising from the glens into the cotton wisps of stratoclouds.  Scotch whiskey in all of its peety glory is distilled throughout the country, and golf was born and is still perfected here in the sweeping vistas of verdant, cliff-side courses.  The accent alone is worth the visit, a golden tongue brogue perfected by both ducks and spies, from Uncle Scrooge to Sean Connery.  We turn again to Braveheart for a reminder of why ones very humanity is incomplete without a visit to the highlands,
"Every man dies, not every man truly lives"  Pack your kilt, purchase your pipes and get to Scotland before it's too late.
