| Gritty glorious Glascow is the working man's heart and soul of Scotland. Scotland's biggest burgh, Glasgow is an old city with an older name, (from Gaelic, Glas Cau, or Green Hollow) with a new and smiling face. Let Edinburgh have its inspired castle, its respected university and its princely political crown. If Edinburgh is the polished hall monitor and honor student that the teacher (Queen) doesn't need to keep her eye on...Glasgow is another story. Glasgow overflows with pubs, bars, and clubs, it is a city full of plazas and al fresco cafes, museums, pedestrian malls, and a young aggressively free-spirited crowd. The Glaswegian dialect is that thick, rich, Scottish brogue that you were hoping for after all of those episodes of Duck Tails bookended by a touch of Trainspotting. Known as the Glasgow Patter, it is an entertaining, challenging song, that will delight the ears as much as it confounds the brain. Wander along the river Clyde to the city's center at George Square. Locomote in a spiral outward, take in a ballet at the Theatre Royal, or meander through the Trongate/ Salt Market area, check out the luxury condos in the 'Arts Quarter', finally, explore an expanding sphere of idiosyncratic and funky spaces in the bohemian West End. Enjoy yourself, and mingle with the locals, but if someone inquires if you'd like a Glasgow Kiss, demure, and walk away, the pleasant sounding smooch involves foreheads in a headbutt, rather than plucky lips on a cheek. Restaurants abound, try a haggis platter, or, if you're missing home, dig into a Jack Daniels basted steak at TGIFridays, ask for Kabir, he's a veritable fountain of Glaswegian trvia.
