Introduction to Alaska
Alaska is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Anchorage is a good starting point for your Alaskan Vacation. From Anchorage you can go to Denali (Mt. McKinley but the native word is Denali), Talkeetna, Seward, Whittier, and Homer just to name a few. The best way to get around Alaska is by car, a rental works fine. The Alaska Railroad is okay, but pretty overpriced for what you're getting, and the air conditioning doesn't always work so be forwarned. Without a car your travel is somewhat restricted however if you want to go towards Seward try the Magic Bus, if you're headed towards Homer or Soldotna try the Homer Stagecoach, and if you're headed towards Denali the Parks Connection is great. Be careful getting the package deals in Denali because most of the time the rate the tour companies are charging you is the full price hotel cost, when during the week the hotels generally reduce their rates quite dramatically. One of the best deals in Denali is the Denali River Cabins, they consistently have deals going on and are very helpful. There's also a hostel in the area. For a tour through Denali the best way to go about it is to call ahead, like months ahead and reserve a bus ride through the park via the visitors center for the park instead of the tour companies, the tour companies charge up to $30 more for the same thing, sometimes even a less thorough tour but they add "snacks". I used to sell tours so I know the ins and outs.
