Grand Canyon, Arizona, is home to the eponymous awe-inspiring national park, one of the oldest and most famous in the country. The Grand Canyon itself is a 227-mile cut in the Colorado Plateau through which the Colorado River runs. Over the course of millions of years the river has eaten into the landscape--at places the canyon is as much as a mile deep--exposing colorful geological strata. The Grand Canyon became a National Park in 1919 and a World Heritage Site in 1979.
The South Rim is the place for easy sight-seeing; it presents some of the best views of the park and is easily accessible. Serious hiking, camping and whitewater rafting are also popular activities.
