Introduction to Phoenix Edit Section - Phoenix Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Phoenix is a relatively new city (founded in the 1880s), and because it's also one of the country's fastest-growing, it has a new-city feel: everything is scrubbed and square and blaring with Americana. Still, this also makes it easily navigable, since it's on a straightforward grid, and easy to adapt to, since you've probably seen most things in downtown in Phoenix in many other places in the country. Still, as the state capital, there's a good bit to do here in terms of arts and culture and recreation (museums, theater, and science centers, for example), and the blazing hot weather means that outdoor activities can be enjoyed year-round. When you can get out of town on one of the many hiking trails through the surrounding cacti-studded mountain and desert, those wide-angle views (and stunning sunsets) make the city look much more quaint.
