Sedona is a stunning little rust-red desert town in central Arizona, built on and among towering spires of rock that come close to rivaling the formations of southern Utah. Babbling brooks flanked by dozens of cairns run through blossoming meadows, and vermilion, cathedral-esque rocks rise up around them, begging to be photographed. The town itself is tiny, insular, and very new-agey, featuring dozens of mystical healing centers and huts where you can get your tarot cards or palm read. Its beauty and clement weather draw a large crowd of retirees, so don't go looking for a wild night out, but there are still a few pleasant restaurants and taverns with terraces and lovely views (of course).

So, I am sure you have heard the same things I did before visiting Sedona... Red rocks, New Age peddlers and nothing to do after eight at night... Well, after my visit some of what I heard was definitely true, but I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by Sedona.  When I first drove into town off of 179 I was greeted with spectacular Red Rock formations.  Trust me when I tell you pictures don't do them justice.  I then made my way to the resort, The Ridge on Sedona Golf Resort.  Located in what is considered the Village of Oak Creek, this resort was great.  Golf course on one side.  Red Rocks on the other and great customer service.  Enough said, right?  Well add in pools, private balconies and in-room kitchens and I felt like I was home.  So, Red Rocks, got that, now New Age peddlers.  Okay, you will see some touristy stuff in Uptown, but you can also choose to hike, etc. and explore this spiritual place on your own.  That is what I did.  Not going to admit to an experience, but with all that natural beaty, something is definitely going on in Sedona.  Okay, nothing to do after eight. Well, really, there isn't, but there are some great restaurants.  A find we made was Fournos restaurant in West Sedona.  Owned by Chef Ivan Flowers, Fournos offers the best food in Sedona.  If you eat one place while you are visiting, eat at Fournos.  Also, there are vineyards about seven miles south of Sedona that offer some fun wine-tastings.

So go west. Go to Sedona. Climb some rocks. Eat at Fournos. And drink some wine by Oak Creek.  Lots of worse ways to spend a vacation...
