California occupies a unique place in the world's imagination. It is a surfing, free-loving paradise; it is smog and the shallow gloss of the Hollywood pop-culture machine; it is the waterfalls of Yosemite and deserts of Death Valley; it is the rugged sophistication of San Francisco and Napa. In truth California is all of these things (it's a pretty big state) and a must-see for any traveler. Whether you want to party like a rockstar, scale Half-Dome like a rockclimber, sip wine like a sophisticate, or simply relax in the sun, California will not disappoint. As the western frontier of the United States, the one thing California is a little short on is history. The state has long been home to cultural mavericks and California's forward-looking exuberance comes with a short attention span; there is a premium on the young and fresh. You won't find ancient historical monuments but you will find ancient Sequoias.

There actually is lots of history in California. The gold rush, early Hollywood, etc.Where Reagan grew up, Nixon, etc. The United States is the freat country today, partly because of California. But don't get bogged down by history - there are loads of fun things to do in Southern California.

If you prefer nature - the deserts, mountains, coast - you name it - there are great places to visit in California. My favorites - Muir Woods, Big Bear Lake, Joshua Tree. And best yet - head up the coast north of San Francisco.
