Introduction to Berkeley
If LA is California's tanned and buffed body, Berkeley is California's slightly schizophrenic brain. The city is most famous for the flagship University of California campus. It was at the affiliated Lawrence Livermore Labs that much of WWII's nuclear research was conducted. During the 1960s and 70s, however, Berkeley's anti-war protests earned it a reputation as a center of radical intellectualism that persists today. The city's bohemian vibe and world-class campus has since attracted free-thinkers of all stripes. Berkeley has a high concentration of homeless and Nobel Laureates both. Today the city is famous for its enduring radical politics, gourmet food, the "hippie" timewarp that is Telegraph Avenue, and its hip cafes and shops.

Berkeley is phenomenal. It feels like a small town and a major metropolis all at once. The university lends it a cosmopolitan feel but it's totally walkable and filled with all kinds of independent quirky establishments.

There's never a dull moment in Berkeley. Although the university is a major draw, there's so much more to the city than UC. Telegraph, Sunday brunch at the Thai Buddhist Temple, People's Park festivals, Happy Happy Man, Elmwood, Ashby flea market, 1920s shingle houses -- Berkeley is vibrant, diverse, and refreshing. Boasting an eclectic mix of students, homeless, families, activisits and everything in between, Berkeley begs to be classified as unclassifiable.
