Introduction to Death Valley National Park
Death Valley is like another world. The park sits in a basin, surrounded by mountains, and feels totally isolated. It's flat, barren, and filled with geological curiosities. And it lives up to its name. In the summer the temperatures regularly top 120º Fahrenheit.
It's worth a visit if you have a broad view of what constitutes natural beauty. The strange salt deposits at the Devil's Golf are incredible. And the lowest point in North America--Badwater, at 290 ft. below sea level--is surreal and colorful.
There are a few National Park-run guest houses here. They are, by far, the most comfortable options. In the winter you can camp. In the summer it's just too damn hot.
