Introduction to Mammoth Lakes Edit Section - Mammoth Lakes Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Mammoth Lakes is a little city nestled into the eastern side of the southern end of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It's famous for all the outdoor activities available, and can seem like a Mountain Dew commercial what with all the rock climbing, skiing, snowboarding and mountain biking going on. Mammoth Lakes was traditionally much more relaxed than upscale resort towns like Vail.

These days Mammoth is changing though.  Bought by mogul IntraWest a few years ago, Mammoth's ski resort -- and the town that surrounds it -- is rapidly losing its backwoods charm and becoming more commercialized, glitzy, and glamourous.  With the addition of an airport big enough to accomodate commerical flights -- a hotly debated issue right now -- Mammoth may soon resemble IntraWest's other "success" story, Whistler.  Construction is booming in Mammoth, and the older, more homespun businesses are being run out.  Still, from skiing and snowboarding during the winter, to fishing and hiking and jazz festivals during the summer, Mammoth Lakes caters to adrenaline junkies and relaxers alike.
