| Napa is in the heart of (yep) the Napa Valley, California's wine country. This area became famous a little over 30 years ago when Napa wines beat out French wines in a blind taste test, held in Paris with French judges. No one expected that to happen (least of all the judges, probably) but it catapulted Napa onto the global gourmet scene.
The Napa Valley is an area built for tourism, especially wine drinkers. The Valley’s north-south corridor is with dotted with famous wineries such as Robert Mondavi and Beringer and is best seen May through October in a shiny convertible with the top down. The same sights can be seen from the wine train that runs parallel to the highway, or by hot air balloon, popular in the spring and early summer months. But Napa also has plenty of hidden gems off the beaten track for those willing to look, such as the famous Carneros region, most of which can be explored by bicycle. The Valley, including Rutherford, Calistoga and St. Helena is a volcanic wonderland, which boasts oak tree covered mountain hiking trails with views, challenging mountain biking trails, relaxing mudbaths and geysers heated by underground lava. |

| Marcy submitted a review on 2007-01-22 21:39... Anytime we go to Napa we always stop by Benziger winery. They have some of the best wines we've found around here. They're bio-dynamic, which is like organic but even fancier. It's kinda fun hearing them talk about all the stuff they do for that, but the bottom line is they have great wines.
Be sure to check out Sonoma Valley, though, it also has great wineries and is often less expensive (fewer wineries in Sonoma charge tasting fees, as most Napa wineries do now).
