Right next to Berkeley and across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco, Oakland is situated in one of the most vibrant and exciting areas in northern California. While the city itself has had a reputation for being rough, this reputation is becoming increasingly inaccurate, thanks to the dedicated efforts of its residents and its mayor, Jerry Brown. For the visitor, the area around Lake Merritt is a great place for a picnic in the city and Jack London Square is definitely worth a visit: it's packed with restaurants and venues, including Yoshi's, one of the nation's premiere jazz clubs.
