To see an especially green side of the area try a visit to Muir Woods, less than an hour from the city over the Golden Gate bridge. Named after famed naturalist John Muir, these lush woods feel positively primordial. Huge ferns, a towering redwood canopy and trickling streams distinguish this distinctly northern Californian beauty. Walking through these silent woods is a perfect way to release the stress of travel. Trails range in difficulty but most aren’t very strenuous. You can pick gorgeous loops as short as 1 mile or as long as 6. (Off U.S. 101, 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. For information call the Ranger: 415-388-2595. Park open daily 8am-sunset. Entrance $3.)

Mount Tamalpais State Park (11 miles away)
This place has some of San Francisco's best day hikes. It's right over the Golden Gate (take the Muir Woods, Mount Tamalpais exit from 101 and follow the signs to Mt. Tamalpais...you'll see trailheads all around). Even on a beautiful Saturday the trails aren't crowded at all. You can hike around the hills or straight down to Muir Beach in less than an hour if you want.

All-Power Indoor Soccer (9 miles away)
All-Power is a little indoor soccer arena with a community of dedicated players and fans near downtown Oakland. There are league games Wednesday through Thursday between 7pm and midnight. You can drop in to watch one (there's a snack bar to keep you sustained during a match) or get yourself on a team. The people here tend to be really friendly and you'll have plenty of opportunities to practice...
