| San Francisco is incredibly well-situated. A drive in almost any direction will take you somewhere beautiful and fun.
1-2 hours south of San Francisco is the beach community of Santa Cruz. There are plenty of popular (but usually not-to-crowded) places to surf on the drive down and in Santa Cruz itself.
To the east, Davis and Sacramento are about an hour's drive away on interstate 80. Beyond them, is the Lake Tahoe. Tahoe's peaks are popular in the winter for great skiing, and the lake is popular for boating, fishing and other water sports in the summer. The lake is pretty cold year 'round though.
To San Francisco's north is wine country in and around Napa. Tons of city yuppies and epicureans cart themselves up here for weekend tastings, which can be a blast, but is getting increasingly expensive. And with more infomation coming out every year on the health benefits of red wine, it's probably worth doing.
Nearer the city, just over the Golden Gate Bridge is the "Mount Tam" and Muir Woods area, which makes for a great day hike with redwoods and windswept coastline both.
