Known, naturally, as "the Sunshine state," Florida also has a good dozen national and state parks and monuments, full of crocodiles and cypress trees, that perhaps draw almost as many visitors as the sparkling white-sand beaches lining this southeastern peninsula. Hurricanes and violent thunderstorms are common, but that doesn't stop the elderly from making this their permanent home; on the other hand, places like Miami uphold their reputation for steamy, high-energy, image-conscious nightlife.
