Introduction to Illinois Edit Section - Illinois Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Illinois' biggest claim to fame is, naturally, Chicago, which makes it the most populous state in the midwest. Not all of Illinois is metropolitan, however: most is rural, agricultural, and suburban, with medium-sized cities sprawling gradually out onto rolling plains of corn and soybeans. The "Heart of Illinois," or western part of the state, is also known as "the Land of Lincoln" (the state slogan), home as it once was to that favorite President. His Springfield home is now a National Historic Site; his tomb, a State Historic Site. Route 66 -- once America's main thoroughfare, the subject of many a song and piece of literature -- also runs through Illinois, rendering it a great place for heart-of-America roadtripping.
