Introduction to Massachusetts Edit Section - Massachusetts Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

One of the quintessential New England states, Massachusetts has a lot to boast of: Boston, for one, Harvard, for another (not to mention the dozens of other prestigious universities), first-European-settler status (the first Pilgrims arrived in what is now Massachusetts), the hub of the American Revolution (you know, the Boston Tea Party and all), and now the largest population of any of the states of the region (due to the large uban center on its coast). Though budding a few skyscrapers, Boston and the surrounding areas still hold a good deal of history -- it's as old as you're going to get when it comes to European settlers in the United States, which makes for interesting architecture, fabulous museums, and quaint old pubs. The western part of the state is still relatively rural, and the Berkshires, or section of the Appalachian Mountains that run through western Massachusetts, are prime for hiking, boating, skiing, and the like.
