Some background information for Boston nightlife: first, be sure to bring your ID. Most bars card everyone, even for entrance, and are pretty strict about it, so don't expect to rely on lax doormen. Also very important is that the T (Boston's public transportation network) shuts down shortly after midnight. The latest clubs and bars shut down at 2am. So you if you're planning on staying out 'til last call, bring some extra cab cash.

If Boston has a nightlife neighborhood it is on Landsdowne Street, near Fenway Park. Here you'll find a row of about 10 clubs, all somewhat similar, and their crowds of black-clad patrons. These clubs offer top 40 music and hip-hop, can charge expensive covers, and cater to those who want to shake it. Many are underwhelmed by Landsdowne Street but if you have to dance, you have to come here.

Boston's speciality, however, is student dives, Irish pubs and swanky lounges. There are pubs are bars (many Irish, many faux Irish) littered around the city. The West End and the North End are good places to look, as is South Boston, a traditionally Irish neighborhood. In the theater district you can find upscale cocktail lounges. And around Boston's colleges, especially in Cambridge, are some of the best and quirkiest student dives, often with great live music.
