Introduction to Cambridge Edit Section - Cambridge Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Cambridge is a little town across the Charles River from Boston and the home of Harvard University and the Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT). City life in Cambridge is centered around a number of "squares," commercial centers at the intersections of streets. These squares have a cobblestone charm and tend to be packed with interesting shops, restaurants, and people. Sometimes called "The People's Republic of Cambridge" the city has tended to be very politically liberal. At the same time, however, it is without a doubt a seat of old money and entrenched power. Harvard Square is definitely worth a stop, even if you're not interested in seeing the university. It's packed with unique shops and things to do. Nearby Inman Square has some of the best restaurants in the Boston Area.
