Introduction to Minnesota
Minnesota is best known for its cultural hub and metropolis: Minneapolis/St. Paul, or "the Twin Cities" (which are, if you ask the locals, basically one big city, divided only by a river, that have nevertheless maintained relative autonomy). The vast majority of the state's population lives in this urban area, while most of the rest of the state has been taken over by agriculture. Still, the boreal forest in the northernmost half of Minnesota remains far less tampered with, and the many state parks and forests (including Lake Itasca, which is the source of the Mississippi River) serve as verdant playgrounds for those who seek venues for mountain biking, camping, and hiking. Known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," Minnesota is also -- like the other states in the region -- a mecca for boaters, kayakers, and fishermen.
