They call it the "Big Sky" state for a reason! Montana feels huge (and is: it'll take you a good eight hours just to drive straight across), with a sky so colossal and a landscape so flat (for the most part) that you're bound to feel just a bit dizzy. The northwestern corner houses breathtaking beauty and Glacier National Park, with huge sparkling lakes and red, chalky earth and deep green pine trees, but from there on eastward, it's flat, flat, and flat, which is not to say that there aren't interesting things to see. Several Native American reservations still exist here, as well as roadside casinos where you can get a buffalo burger, play the slots (or pretend to) and receive a whole bunch of free snacks and drinks. Missoula, Helena, and Butte are among the state's bigger cities, and in each you'll find some lovely architecture and fun cultural events.
