Like any town in the West where the winters are long and cold, there are plenty of places to find a drink in Gardiner. Saloon-type places and true local bars can be found in the heart of the small town. The Two Bit is a local hangout, with a wood-burning stove, two pool tables and a full jukebox. They also serve good bar food during the day. The selection of wine is lacking, but the beers on tap are always good. Try a Fat Tire, a nice amber-colored lager, or a Moose Drool, a brew that is a little darker. There are often jam sessions in the evenings. The K-Bar serves pizza by day and turns into a local hangout in the evenings, with pool tables and a room that can be reserved for various occasions. It usually attracts a younger crowd. Next-door is the Devil’s Slide, a tiny little bar, dark and private, which is mostly known for its live music during the summer. There is also the Blue Goose, which arguably has the cheapest drinks in town; its also the only bar in town that allows smoking. They have foosball, pool and a full jukebox, but be prepared to hang out in a thick shroud of cigarette smoke. It can get rowdy on the weekends and also in the summer, when the crowds of college-aged people, in Yellowstone to work for the summer, flock to the Goose to while away the hours before work the next day. During the winter months, it becomes a haven for locals looking to expel the chill of months of below-zero weather. Come during the day to get a drink from Bruce, hands down the best bartender in Gardiner, if not all of Montana.

If you’re a sports fan, the Rusty Rail in the Best Western is the best place to go, with all the big games on their big screen TV. This bar has the best selection of wines of any bar in town. They also have a selection of gambling games, and often do free food at half time during Monday Night Football games. In addition, the Blue Goose and Two Bit have TVs, and if you cozy up to the bartenders, they may just let you watch anything you want.

For wine drinkers, aside from the Rusty Rail, which is attached to the Yellowstone Mine Restaurant, your best bets will be the restaurants, specifically Pedalino’s, which carries a wider selection of nicer wines. If you would like to buy your own bottles of wine, the Food Farm offers a wide selection, as well as of beers and liquors, especially impressive due to the remote nature of Gardiner.
