Vegas, baby, Vegas! Nevada is definitely best known for its desert pleasure island, Las Vegas, and Reno, its smaller sibling in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Both cities (although Reno to a lesser extent) draw gamblers and vacationers from across the U.S. and send the senses reeling with neon lights, ringing bells, and general overstimulation. On the Vegas strip is pure bacchanalia. The Reno scene is a little mellower; many people come to the area for Lake Tahoe or the great skiing in the mountains that surround it and ignore the casinos.

But these are Nevada's two urban centers and, although Las Vegas is one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S., the vast majority of the state is rural and 87% of the land in Nevada is still owned by the federal government. Nevada's rural towns aren't spectacular but are filled with helpful, easygoing people. And the desert of Nevada can be breathtaking. Check out the spectacular Great Basin National Park or, if you want overstimulation in the wild make the pilgimage to the Burning Man arts festival in the summer.
