This desert non-metropolis often gets a bad rap. Reno 911 and multiple Sister Act movies have not painted the world's "Biggest Little City" in the most favorable of lights, neon or otherwise. Reno is a conundrum, a city-village that celebrates its quirky size and paradoxical position as a Western country town and ever growing urban locale. A huge downtown beautification project has turned the seedy 70's casino kitsch of the Circus Circus crowd into a pretty pedestrian mall, centered around wine shops, lounge bars and, of course, the silvery rills of the Truckee River, babbling through the city with a growing set of kayakers gambling on Reno as a new outdoor mecca, not just a blackjack capital for the geriatric set. Arts and Life are at the center of a city-wide renaissance that realizes with the heavy Cherokee competition of nationwide reservation gambling that Nevada -- and Northern Nevada especially -- cannot rest on the laurels of Lady Luck and drive-through-divorce. The natives are restless and gambling's gone gauche. Reno is emerging from a casino chrysalis and "No-Town's" biggest little butterfly wings are shaking off the stereotypes of gossamer blown to dust like a hot pair of dice on the craps table. The home of the National Bowling Stadium and the National Automobile Museum, host to Hot August Nights, the Best of The West Rib Cook Off, and ART TOWN are just the beginning, Tahoe beckons and this little Basque bastion is betting big...little city big.
