Introduction to Virginia City
Virginia City is a veritable and visitable time capsule. It is open year round but it is lost in time. Virginia city is a tiny mountain town clinging to the deserted mountain slopes of the Sierra Nevadas. It was very briefly the epicenter of the gold rush, a summer home to Lady Luck and Fashionable Fortune, the "Bonanza Kings" came paupers and left in private train cars, mansions dotting the hills bearing their names. After the discovery of the Comstock Lode, the tiny mining camp turned into the most prosperous and influential settlement between Denver and San Francisco. The city that blossomed in its haphazard heyday was a rough and tumbleweed kind of locale full of overnight millionaires, prospectors, outlaws and prostitutes. Mark Twain came to town and took over as a reporter at the the local newspaper, "The Territorial Enterprise." Twain and other notables often frequenting the still standing "Bucket O' Blood Saloon" The original Old-West boardwalk with the creaking aged sidewalks and overhanging saloon balconies remains the center piece of this delightful little history adventure-land. The soil has long ago yielded its vast reserves of gold and silver, but this hardy little hamlet hasn't lost its cowboy character and wild west charisma.
