Introduction to Albany
Albany, the capital of New York state, is a pleasant, countrified town compared to its dizzyingly metropolitan neighbor (New York City is practically a state unto itself, and has very little to do with the look and feel of its upstate cousins). Though for this reason it has been nicknamed "Smallbany" in certain circles, there are still many things going for it: upwards of one hundred thousand residents, half a dozen colleges and universities, massive sports arenas and concert venues, and a thriving, if relatively small, arts and music scene. Four lakes sparkle within the city's boundaries, and old brick cathedrals, mansions, and other impressive architecture from Albany's rich colonial days still look fresh. Historical sites and museums commemorating the various communities who've contributed to its cultural makeup dot the town with regularity, and though it's no Manhattan, you can still get a great meal -- and have it, if you like, while basking on the deck of a cruise boat on the nearby Hudson River.
