Introduction to Lake Placid Edit Section - Lake Placid Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Lake Placid is a small town, but is still one of the bigger towns in the Adirondacks. Featuring a charming main street, made up of cozy boutiques, bookshops, and cafes, and a few threads of residential neighborhoods, stores, fitness centers, and schools, it is located along Mirror Lake (not Lake Placid, odd as it seems), and is a bustling center of winter sport activity. Lake Placid hosted the Winter Olympics in both 1932 and 1980, and no one has forgotten. Downtown Lake Placid hosts many ice skating events and compititions in its massive rink, and nearby you'll find a huge Olympic training facility and a massive ski jump jutting up from the trees. Nearby Whiteface Mountain is a popular skiing destination, and every winter sport imaginable -- from dogsledding to ski-jumping to luge -- pops up in the cold months. All seasons are beautiful here, however, and Lake Placid is home to many lovely bed and breakfasts and hotels that make for a very comfortable and decidedly romantic stay.
