Introduction to New York Edit Section - New York Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

No one knows for sure why New Yorkers call their city “The Big Apple.”  Some say the name was coined by jazz musicians who opted to move to Manhattan and were therefore picking the metaphorical “Big Apple” off the tree.  Others say the name derives from a horserace that had something big and apple-like for a prize.  This prize was so big, in fact, that it was comparable in size with the city; to distinguish between them, the city the race was held in had to be named “The Big Apple,” so people would know which apple it was.  In either, or neither, case, New York is a town all about making it big and living large.  The island of Manhattan is just 22.7 mi_, but it has enough glitter to single-handedly prevent the entire continental United States from ever descending into a cultural dark age.  Of course, the city also generates enough garbage in a single day to block out the sun: a whopping 26,400,000 lbs!  The 8 million residents of the Five Boroughs (Brooklyn, The Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island) come from everywhere in the world to work hard and get theirs here.  As a result, living in New York is a lot like living everywhere in the world at once, but at a much faster pace.

Spent 4 days in New York in April... loved it!  I loved Central Park, I loved walking around the NYU area and watching the students walking around, I loved walking through SoHo and finding all sorts of awesome jewelry vendors on the sidewalk...  This city has such a great vibe, and each section of town has a different feel to it.  Such a fun place to be!

NYC- one of the best cities ever! there is so much to do there- if you've got the time of course..i like walking around Soho and the Village, wandering between all the art galleries and unique stores, there's such a good vibe in the area..I love the Flick Collection..a small and rather unknown contemporary art museum. For lots of ideas of the less unknown places to visit i try Tripcart they have a decent NYC guide
I also recommend using the daily newspaper- there are always special shows and festivals mentioned there and a lot of them are free.:)

One of my favorite parts of New York is TriBeCa.  While everyone knows that its a trendy place to be, its also alot of fun just to walk around on a sunny day.  The old building are very cool and there is always a cool new bar to discover.  My favorite Bar is Grace located on 114 Franklin St.  I always make a point to stop in there, and then visit the TriBeCa Grand.  TriBeCa Grand is expensive, but there its such a cool place to hang out.  The interior architecture reallys make for jet set style ambience.

When Im feeling very low key, I head up the Upper East Side and visit some friends.  In the spring and summer its great to hang out in any of the bars and cafes on Lexington avenue.

Im headed back for 4 days at the end of June.  I can't wait.

There is no way I could ever live in New York but I never miss the chance to go visit.  There's a certain excitement I get everytime I walk through the streets there.  I also love walking around to find cute boutiques and stores.  And of course you have to do something touristy while your there.  Last time I went on a Sex in the City Tour and an NBC Studio Tour.  The Sex in the City Tour turned out to be a blast mainly because it was guided by a stand up comedian who dressed like Carrie.
