For information about transportation to and from all airports serving New York City call 800-AIRRIDE. JFK International Airport can be a hassle, but it’s still the city’s major hub. You're other options are La Guardia Airport and Newark Airport. When arriving in a New York airport, ignore any solicitation for taxis you may receive; it is illegal to offer someone a ride in the airport itself, and those who do so are often scam artists. |
New York has one of the best public transportation systems on the planet. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most expensive. A ride on the bus or the subway costs $2; swipe your Metrocard (available at local stores and in subway stations) before boarding the bus or passing through subway turnstiles. There are two types of Metrocard: Unlimited and Per-Ride. Unlimited cards allow a single rider to travel as often as he or she likes during their effective period and are available in 1 day ($7), 1 week ($24), and 30 day ($76) denominations; Per-Ride cards can be filled with any amount you wish. Free automatic transfers between bus and train are always transferred to your card. Up to three children under 44” tall ride free with an adult.

New York has a plethora of interesting newspapers. The New York Times is the most famous of the bunch; it is the city’s flagship, upscale and intellectual rag. The Village Voice is a free liberal arts and news weekly. The New York Observer takes a critical tone. The two great tabloids of the town are The Daily News and New York Newsday. The Wall Street Journal is the place to look if you want to find out what to do with your money. The Amsterdam News is a paper concentrating on African Americans. For listings, the magazine Time Out New York simply cannot be beat: it has information on the best clubs, restaurants, art exhibits, and entertainment. The New Yorker is the place to look for a literary take on the world.

| Laundromats are a dime a dozen in New York. If you don’t see one the second you walk out onto the street in a residential neighborhood, just ask someone passing by. One caveat: do not leave your clothes unattended, there is some chance they may become part of someone else’s wardrobe if you do! |
