Tucked into the pacific northwest, Oregon (pronounced Orygun by the locals) is a beautiful, geographically diverse state. There is the desert and plains of central and eastern Oregon, lush forests further west, and, on the western edge, the rugged and undeveloped Pacific coast. While Crater Lake is the state's only official national park, the title seems a little superfluous when the whole state feels like a nature preserve. Outdoors enthusiasts will find lots to occupy themselves with.

Oregon's cities tend to be extremely laid-back--probably due in part to the serene environment. Salem is the capital, and second largest city in the state. Eugene is the home of the University of Oregon (and immortal hometown runner Steve Prefontaine). Unless there's a Ducks football game going on Eugene feels bohemian and comfortably relaxed. Portland is Oregon's largest city, on the Pacific coast. While it does feel like a metropolis it still has Oregon's insuppressible counter-culture vibe. Further south the hamlet (heh) of Ashland holds a huge Shakespeare festival every fall that draws crowds from California and elsewhere with world-class performances.
