| Southern Oregon and central London have more in common than you might imagine, including a passion for the Bard. Though the two cities don't share a commonality in size and scope, they both enjoy the tights-off of theatre and art. Sure, London's West End has a more famous, and larger acting scene, but Ashland is no slouch. This small little art town in the hills of Oregon is bursting at its seams with culture, class, and creativity. Unlike so many small American towns, Ashland is not a generic, strip-mallified Wal-Mart orbit. Instead, the town is oriented around a grassy jewel in the center of town, Lithia Park. The park is peaceful and playful, full of children and adults, quiet readers, and picnicking families. Stroll the many winding paths, wade in the clear river, enjoy the Japanese garden, and take a turn on the swings.
The deservedly famous Oregon Shakespeare Festival draws theatreheads from across the nation. Overlooking Lithia park, a Globe-inspired playhouse, the Elizabethan Theatre, showcases both the poetry of Shakespeare and the beauty of the outdoors in this open-aired theatre. Downtown beckons from just outside the green, inviting you to enjoy the funky, artsy shopping, as well as the many wine shops and gourmet gastropubs. Finally, put the chery on top of your day with a triple fudge sundae at the classically fashioned Main Street ice cream parlor.
In Ashland, the stage is set for an excellent, relaxing, cultural experience. Ashland is only 15 miles north of the California border, and is a short drive away from both Crater Lake and the Oregon coast. Get thine self some tickets, and experience one of America's most delightfully unique, and cultured little cities. |
