| The city of Houston was founded in 1836 by brothers Augustus and John Allen. The city is named after General Sam Houston, who led the Texas Army to its victory at the 1836 Battle of San Jacinto. In 1837, the city of Houston was incorporated into the Republic of Texas and served as its capital from 1837 to 1840. |
