Introduction to Bryce Canyon
You've gotta see it to believe it. Gigantesque red rock, jutting to the heavens in red-and-white striped spires (called hoodoos) that balance atop one another on the narrowest of necks. The silence and serenity is astonishing as you walk along the dusty red trails, marvel at mysterious spiralling tree trunks, and duck under carved stone archways; all seems solid, while at the same time shockingly impermanent. What seems to be a sinuous outcropping of solid rock is in fact a puzzle made of thousands of small rocks, ready to topple at any moment. You don't need to pass any fitness tests, either, to find yourself strolling among these majestic natural fortresses. A drive through the Park's entrance to a parking lot complete with restrooms lands you at the edge of this staggering valley, and all you have to do is start descending into it on any of a series of short trails.
