What is now the state of Virginia (named after the "virgin" Queen Elizabeth I) was one of the first British colonies, making it a great place for history buffs. Highlights include Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown Settlement (the first permanent English settlement, now a museum with outdoor re-creations), dozens of historic buildings ranging from churches to former U.S. Presidents' homes, walking trails and battlegrounds from the Civil War; the list goes on and on. It's also a great stop for outdoorsy types, as there are dozens of state parks waiting to be explored, and many varying landscapes, from the Chesapeake Bay to the Appalachian Mountains to the Shenandoah Valley.
