Introduction to Seattle Edit Section - Seattle Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Seattle is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest, and entered the popular consciousness as the home of grunge rock and gourmet coffee, but the city's appeal transcends $4 lattes. Seattle has a lot to offer the traveler: the Pike Place Market (where you can catch a "flying fish"), a Rem Koolhaas-designed library, the iconic Space Needle, the new Experience Music Project, and many small museums. Seattle's live music scene also continues to thrive. Nirvana's original label, Sub Pop, has been nurturing local newcomers like Death Cab for Cutie and the Shins.  Seattleites soak up the city's offering--and the famous rain--with a mellow satisfaction despite all the coffee. This might have something to do with their education: Seattle has been named America's most literate major city, and has an impressively high percentage of college graduates. While Kurt Cobain is gone (R.I.P.), you may be able to find nirvana in this rainy--and brainy--city anyway.

I love this city!  I've been here numerous times and I always find lots of new things to do and different areas to explore.  Although it can be kind of hard to find, the Freemont Troll is cool to see as well as Gas Works Park.  Some Seattle events to check out are Bumbershoot (a music and arts festival), the everchanging exhibits at the EMP, and Winterfest at the Seattle Center.

Seattle is a wonderful place and a must stop for anyone visiting the Pacific Northwest. At least one day should be devoted to downtown...even if you skip the usual tourists spots like Pike Place and the Space Needle. The SAM (Seattle Art Museum) always has interesting exhibits and the new library (well, new in 2004) is an architectural delight. If you're their during summer or early fall, take in a game at SafeCo Field. Mariners' fans are some of the best in the West, despite their team's performance. If you're hip to pinball and punk rock, I suggest Shorty's in Bell Town. Get a Number 2 and Ranier for me. Discovery Park in Magnolia offers several miles of good hiking/biking trails,  including access to the beach on the Puget Sound. Check that out at Sunset. And don't overlook my favorite thing about Seattle: pho.  It's everywhere, it's cheap, and it's pho-king delicious! If you have wheels, do venture east on the I-90...in 30 minutes (traffic willing) you can be on the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie River. The fishing isn't astounding but the scenery is...as are the shakes at Scott's Dairy Freeze in North Bend :)
