While Hugo Chavez's rabid populism and anti-American rants certainly can't have increased travel from the USA, Venezuela is a lush, resource rich ( petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, gold, bauxite, other minerals, hydropower, diamonds,) South American nation.  Bordering both the North Atlantic and the Caribbean as well as Colombia and Guyana, Venezuela has a population of 26,000,000 citizens, which is certainly a lot of 'Che' t-shirts.  With a landmass roughly twice the size of California,  and a per capita GDP of under 7,000 dollars, Venezuela is a land rich but people-poor nation.  Bisected by Enya's favorite stretch of waterway, the Orinoco river flows from the highlands of Colombia into the Caribbean Sea.  Venezuela is also topographically favored, it is home to the world's biggest waterfall (in the southerly Guiana Highlands), Angel Falls and South America's largest lake, Maracaibo.  The capital city of Caracas boasts South America's most diverse culinary traditions, a heterodox hodgepodge of Indigenous, African, and European influences.  Sample the Pabellon, where else are you going to get stewed meat and banana?  Or, for the more adventurous, try the capybara, a local holiday delicacy, and the world's largest rodent.
