Introduction to Kinshasa
Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is not a destination for the faint hearted. In fact, I don't know anyone who has gone there on vacation. The city does, however, warrant its reputation as the "Paris of Africa," as a vibrant, artistic, music-filled and creative metropolis. Lets just say that you will not be bored.
Since the 1980s the city has deteriorated in safety and beauty. But a revival has begun to bud in the past year with more investment pouring into the country. Kinshasa has a lot of potential and will undoubtedly rise again to become the great city that it was meant to be.
The people of Kinshasa love to party. Almost every saturday, a live concert is organized in a public space. The clubs are filled until dawn with sweaty, dancing people. The beers are brewed following a long tradition of excellence and are drunk out of large 40 ounce bottles. Most people you meet are friendly and curious. However (and this is a big however):
*If you are morally opposed to paying police men bribes, if you are flustered by witnessing acts of random violence, if you hate mosquitoes and walking on unlit dirt paths, this is not the place for you.*
On the other hand, if you have made a local friend that will take you under their wing, pick you and take you to the airport, take you to eat at their family's, show you the cool spots to hear live music around town, tell you when it is time to leave a place based on their unwavering instinct for danger, then you should definitely visit. Do not attempt to discover the subtleties of the city on your own... this would be stupid.
The UN peacekeepers have a large presence here, with a reinforced base as big as the airport in a nearby suburb. The police are useless.
